Child's birth registration with South African consulate

Hi there, I am South African, but my son was born as a UK national. Does anyone know if I can delay his birth registration with South Africa until a time that he actually wants/needs to become a South African citizen?

(i.e., in the meantime we just use his UK passport for short visits to South Africa)
