Your NIE number essentially stays with you for life. It sounds like you have a temporary NIE which does run out after 3 months. If you are planning to stay longer in Spain then you make an appointment at the office near you (mine was near Casa del Campo in Madrid) and they issue you with a green NIE card which shows your address in Spain as well as your NIE number. This card lasts for 10 years (I believe). To do this process you need a work contract, and bank statements, I think.@Paul - what do you mean by residence permit? I think the green card with your NIE on is a residence permit? I don't have a Spanish ID card only my green NIE.
